As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Australia is bound by several agreements relating to international trade. The Attorney-General’s Department supports the Australian Government in the application and development of international trade law by providing legal advice on the consistency of Government initiatives with Australia’s international trade obligations. This is done in accordance with the Legal Services Directions 2005 and the guidelines on legal services provided to Government.
The WTO dispute settlement system provides a binding and enforceable mechanism through which member countries can enforce their trade rights. The Attorney-General’s Department provides advice and advocacy in WTO disputes where Australia is involved.
Working in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Attorney-General’s Department also provides assistance in the drafting of treaty text, legal advice and advocacy in international trade negotiations.
Information regarding Australia's Trade Policy can also be found on the DFAT website.
