AGIS : Attorney-General's Information Service is produced by the Lionel Murphy Library of the Attorney-General's Department. It is a comprehensive indexing and abstracting service. Over 120 law journals from the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Pacific region are comprehensively indexed. Articles from major law journals from other countries including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom are selectively indexed for Australian content and interest. Overall, more than 400 English language journals are looked at in the preparation of AGIS.
AGIS covers all areas of the law including constitutional law, trade practices, family law, intellectual property, companies and securities, copyright, legal theory, medical law, land rights, administrative law, legal aid, criminal law, administration of justice and international law.
AGIS began as a printed information service to officers of the Attorney-General's Department in 1975 and became a database on SCALE, the Department's legal information retrieval system, in the early 80's. SCALE is now called SCALEplus. AGIS on Scaleplus is only available to officers of the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department.
The AGIS database contains over 125,000 records which is all material indexed and abstracted from 1975 to present. Each record contains the Author, Title of article, journal citation, abstract, descriptors, jurisdiction covered by the article and since 1991 relevant cases or legislation referred to in the article.
The AGIS database and AGIS Plus Text which includes the full AGIS database with links to PDF copies of copyright cleared articles are available from RMIT, on the Informit website.
AGIS is also available as the Australian Legal Journals Index by subscription through Thomson.
