Background Checking

Background checking involves gathering information about a person from a variety of sources. The sources can include:

  • criminal history certificates from CrimTrac
  • a security assessment from ASIO, and
  • in the case of ASICs and MSICs, a right-to-work check from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Information about an applicant is assessed against each scheme’s disqualifying criteria to determine the individual’s suitability as an applicant. The individual’s eligibility is then reported as a final finding to the relevant issuing body or entity.

The final decision to authorise a Security Identification Card (SIC) or to provide access to a secure facility that handles SSBAs remains the responsibility of the issuing body or entity. However, a SIC or facility-access cannot be granted to an individual who is assessed as ineligible.

All of AusCheck’s background checks are carried out with the full knowledge of the individual, who provides the personal information that is assessed. All personal information is dealt with in strict accordance with the Information Privacy Principles and the Privacy Act 1988.
