Just a reminder?
What is the project about?
This project has been funded by the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department. It is:
- identifying what is distinctive in the work of crime prevention workers and developing elective units of competency to be added, after endorsement from ANTA, to the already existing Local Government Training Package;
- recommending ways in which units of competency already existing in other Training Packages might be 'customised' to align more adequately with crime prevention work;
- identifying and auditing 'support materials' to support the crime prevention industry.
The project commenced in April and will run until December 2002.
What have we been doing?
- Consulting
Over the past two months the team have been consulting with key stakeholders and crime prevention practitioners.
This consultation has involved so far:
- A meeting with the Project Advisory Group in Canberra.
- A teleconference with representatives from related national Industry Training Advisory Boards and the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department.
- A series of project information meetings for key stakeholders including state Industry Training Advisory Boards and associated bodies, and state jurisdictional representatives.
- Interviews with core practitioners and practitioners from related networks about their work in crime prevention (tapes will be transcribed during July for close analysis by the researchers).
- Many telephone conversations and email interactions with individuals across Australia about the project.
What?s next?
- Phase 3 - Drafting
The next phase of the project will involve us drafting the units of competency. These draft units will then be circulated, via a questionnaire, to a sample of practitioners for consideration and feedback. After receiving the feedback, a small reference group of practitioners will help us to further refine the units of competency. In this phase we will also be building our database of support materials. - Phase 4 - Feedback and final validation
Final drafts of the units of competency and the audit of support materials will be emailed to participants from the first three phases of the project with requests for feedback and comment. - Phase 5 - Submission to the Australian National Training Authority
The materials and information will be submitted to ANTA for the endorsement process. The final report for the project will be submitted to the Project Advisory Group.
How can you be a part of this project?
Our aim is to produce a set of materials - new elective units, recommendations for customising existing units and support materials - that will reflect various roles undertaken by crime prevention practitioners around Australia and that can be used by the broad range of industry sectors with an interest in crime prevention.
To ensure we meet this aim, we are seeking your involvement along the way:
- we may be in contact with you for participation in a focus group or for an interview
- we urge you to help us by disseminating this Newsletter and any other materials as widely as possible to others in your organisations
- we encourage you to contact us with your comments or questions.
We fully understand that people have great demands on their time, so we appreciate your time and participation. Thank you for your help.
