Interventions for Prisoners Returning to the Community

Following their release from prison, many prisoners reoffend and are returned to custody.  The Australian Attorney-General’s Department commissioned the Institute of Criminology to investigate the support available to prisoners on their release.

The research was conducted in two phases.  The first phase comprised a literature review describing the current state of knowledge about post-release interventions,
and the characteristics of the returning offender population.

The second phase was an inventory of services throughout Australia established to assist prisoners on their release.

The report highlights key issues in the management of post release services which may assist in the development of  policies and practices to reduce the incidence of recidivism.
